The BBC has confirmed Poldark will end after its upcoming fifth season.
The British historical period drama stars Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson as Ross and Demelza Poldark.
The lead stars are returning in the final season, also returning are Jack Farthing (George Warleggan), Luke Norris (Dr Dwight Enys), Gabriella Wilde (Caroline Enys), Ellise Chappell (Morwenna Carne), Harry Richardson (Drake Carne), Beatie Edney (Prudie) and Tom York (Sam Carne).
Filming for season five began earlier this week, with scenes being filmed in Cornwall, Bristol and surrounding areas.
Poldark, which airs on ABC in Australia, is based on the book series of the same name by Winston Graham.
Season four was based on the seventh novel in the series, The Angry Tide. The following novel, The Stranger From The Sea, featured a ten-year time jump and, as such, won’t necessarily be the main source of inspiration for season five.
Debbie Horsfield, who has written every episode of the four previous seasons, has revealed what’s in store for the fifth and final chapter.
“In The Stranger from the Sea Winston Graham made many references to developments that happened in the ‘gap’ years. Much can also be inferred,” she says.
“There are, of course, also historical events and people of the time, both in Cornwall and in London. Series five will draw on all of these to follow the lives of the Poldarks, George Warleggan, the Enyses, and the Carnes in this intervening period.”
Meanwhile Andrew Graham, the son of Winston and series consultant on behalf of his father, says the story is in ‘safe hands’ with Debbie.
“No-one can know what my father would have felt about the forthcoming series, let alone what he might have written. However, Debbie Horsfield has demonstrated such an extraordinary affinity with his work and shown such remarkable skill in bringing his Poldark characters to the screen that we know we are in safe hands. Indeed, without her, the Estate would not have agreed to series five in this form,” he says.
Poldark will return with its fifth and final season in 2019.
