Maggie is lonely because her grandkids have stopped visiting her. There’s one way to solve the problem, but it involves Arthur making a donation. Is he willing to do it?
In Mother And Son this week, Maggie (Denise Scott) is baking cupcakes for her grandson Keelan (Blaiyze Barksdale) and granddaughter Melody (Zara Tate).
But the sad truth is, her daughter Robbie’s (Angela Nica Sullen) wife Liz (Virginia Gay) won’t let her babysit after school anymore, ever since Maggie almost burnt down the house with Keelan and Melody in it.
Maggie is missing the kids so badly that when she’s out at the shops with Arthur (Matt Okine) and he leaves her on her own for a minute, she wanders off with a passing group of primary school students.
She joins in a game of Red Rover on the school oval with just a little too much enthusiasm – and Arthur ends up having a very awkward conversation with his former principal, Mr Worstin (Andrew McFarlane).
When Robbie (Angela Nica Sullen) drops around with a proposal for Arthur. Her friends, Priya (Maria Thattil) and Jasmin (Veronica Milsom), want a “brown baby”, and she’s volunteered him as a sperm donor. Maggie thinks it’s a wonderful idea.
She couldn’t be happier,” Denise, 68, tells TV Week. “She loves the thought, because her assumption is that she’s going to have another grandchild. She doesn’t have that much faith in Arthur doing it the normal way.”
Arthur is a lot less enthusiastic about the idea.
“It all stems from his insecurities around his ability to be a dad,” Matt, 38, explains.
“He’s always looked to his dad as someone who is a great example of fatherhood and he doesn’t feel like he can live up to the task.”
Priya and Jasmin drop around to get to know Arthur over lunch. They’re obviously satisfied with him, because they turn up on the doorstep again.
This time, just as the family is about to attend a funeral in the backyard – to announce that Jasmin is ovulating. Is Maggie about to become a grandmother again?
