We are getting to the pointy end of the MasterChef Australia competition. After farewelling Sam last night, there are only nine cooks left in the competition – and they’re heading to Japan!
The top nine contestants left on MasterChef Australia are: Arum Nixon, Ben Ungermann, Callan Smith, Diana Chan, Eliza Wilson, Eloise Praino, Karlie Verkerk, Sarah Tiong and Tamara Graffen.
Next week the contestants will cook their way through a series of challenges while embracing the food culture of Tokyo and regional Japan.
Contestants will explore downtown Tokyo to source fresh ingredients for Sunday’s night’s mystery box challenge.
On Monday, they will have to make an eight-course menu for the judges Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris and Matt Preston, as well as some of Tokyo’s top foodies in a Kappo (degustation-style) restaurant.
The challenges don’t stop there! On Tuesday, the judges welcome the contestants to the Obuchi Tea Plantation, near Mount Fuji. The contestant with the most impressive dish will be awarded an immunity pin.
Wednesday will see the contestants take over the local Yokocho, an alleyway packed with street stalls where they will be broken up into teams of three to feed hundreds of diners.
On Thursday night, one more contestant will leave the competition after completing an elimination challenge inspired by the past and the future at the historic Akagi Shrine in the heart of Tokyo.
The action-packed Japan Week wraps with a very special MasterClass on the hilltop of Tateyama Castle with Michelin star and third-generation sushi chef, Kagehisa Imada.
