Fans Of Home And Away may need to brace themselves โ€“ much-loved character Irene is preparing to leave [Summer Bay]. Or rather, the actress who plays her, Lynne McGranger, is getting out of town โ€“ and the country.

โ€œI get bored very easily,โ€ Lynne, 64, tells TV WEEK. โ€œIโ€™m one of those people who needs a bit of a change-up and something different.โ€

When TV WEEK earlier this year reported Irene was leaving the Bay, upset fans assumed Lynne, who has been with H&A for more than two decades, was quitting the show.

Recently, those same rumours have resurfaced, much to Lynneโ€™s disbelief.

โ€œIโ€™m like, โ€˜That was six months ago, people,โ€™โ€ she says. โ€œLet it be.โ€

However, Lynne is able to look on the bright side โ€“ fans really do care about Irene.

โ€œAt least people arenโ€™t saying, โ€˜At last sheโ€™s leaving,โ€™โ€ she says. โ€œTheyโ€™re going, โ€˜No, please donโ€™t.โ€™ Thatโ€™s nice.โ€

In truth, Lynne is heading to the UK to do pantomime. Itโ€™s an annual pilgrimage for the veteran actress.

โ€œIโ€™m off to York to play the wicked fairy in Beauty And The Beast,โ€ she enthuses. โ€œIโ€™m really looking forward to it.โ€

After filming emotional scenes involving her H&A characterโ€™s son Mick (Kristian Schmid), Lynne is excited about her panto role.

โ€œItโ€™s physically demanding,โ€ she says. โ€œWe do 12 shows a week. And we rehearse it in about nine days.

โ€œRay Meagher [her H&A co-star, who plays Alf] always tells me Iโ€™m mad for still doing it. But I love it.โ€

When sheโ€™s back from the UK, Lynne will return to the Bay.

โ€œIrene can be a polarising character,โ€ she says. โ€œBut itโ€™s when people donโ€™t care about you that you start packing your bags.โ€
