Fans Of Home And Away may need to brace themselves โ much-loved character Irene is preparing to leave [Summer Bay]. Or rather, the actress who plays her, Lynne McGranger, is getting out of town โ and the country.
โI get bored very easily,โ Lynne, 64, tells TV WEEK. โIโm one of those people who needs a bit of a change-up and something different.โ
When TV WEEK earlier this year reported Irene was leaving the Bay, upset fans assumed Lynne, who has been with H&A for more than two decades, was quitting the show.
Recently, those same rumours have resurfaced, much to Lynneโs disbelief.
โIโm like, โThat was six months ago, people,โโ she says. โLet it be.โ
However, Lynne is able to look on the bright side โ fans really do care about Irene.
โAt least people arenโt saying, โAt last sheโs leaving,โโ she says. โTheyโre going, โNo, please donโt.โ Thatโs nice.โ
In truth, Lynne is heading to the UK to do pantomime. Itโs an annual pilgrimage for the veteran actress.
โIโm off to York to play the wicked fairy in Beauty And The Beast,โ she enthuses. โIโm really looking forward to it.โ
After filming emotional scenes involving her H&A characterโs son Mick (Kristian Schmid), Lynne is excited about her panto role.
โItโs physically demanding,โ she says. โWe do 12 shows a week. And we rehearse it in about nine days.
โRay Meagher [her H&A co-star, who plays Alf] always tells me Iโm mad for still doing it. But I love it.โ
When sheโs back from the UK, Lynne will return to the Bay.
โIrene can be a polarising character,โ she says. โBut itโs when people donโt care about you that you start packing your bags.โ
