Amazon has their own fantasy-filled version of Game of Thrones in the works – the network has officially greenlit a TV adaptation of The Lord of The Rings.
The streaming service has reached a deal with J.R.R Tolkein’s estate, HarperCollins and Warner Bros. Television to create a new story (with multiple seasons) that will serve as a prequel to The Fellowship Of The Ring.
The huge deal is probably going to be one of the most expensive TV shows ever made and also includes a potential spin-off series.
No writing team is attached to the project yet, nor does it have a name. Due to the scale of it, we’re guessing it’s going to be years until we see the series on the small screen.
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins.
“Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
Sean Astin, who played Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s films, spoke last week about the possibility of the story being rebooted as opposed to a prequel.
“I’ve been saying for 15 years that maybe like 12 years after Lord of the Rings came out, that it would get remade,” he said.
“And people always said, ‘Oh no, it’ll never get remade! It’s a classic! They could never top it!’ And I’m like, ‘No, it’ll get remade. It’s a massive story! The characters are so beloved.”
While we won’t see a reprisal of Sean’s character (or any other characters from the trilogy), maybe we’ll see some of Samwise’s hobbit ancestors? We cannot wait!
