Lisa Wilkinson and a host of other high profile Australian women have gone on tape reading mean tweets about themselves to demonstrate the abuse women are forced to put up with online.
Lisa Wilkinson, Sam Frost, Sarah Harris and Tracey Spicer were amongst the high-profile women who read out some of the abusive tweets they receive in an effort to shed light on what women have to tolerate.
The video was created by website Mamamia in an effort to stem gendered abuse online and demonstrate that it’s never ok.
Today show presenter Lisa Wilkinson demonstrated how in spite of her extraordinary career and remarkable talent, she has to constantly cop abuse for her appearance, reading out the following:
“@lisawilkinson: Someone else pls dress Lisa she has terrible frumpy taste and those block line colours AGHHHH!”
“@lisawilkinson: surely we should not see an outfit twice? Oh an what’s with the half-done hair? YUCK!”
Former bachelorette Sam Frost, who made headlines after being brutally dumped by Bachelor Blake Garvey, showed how she now has to put up with horrible (albeit kind of hilarious) abuse online:
“@samfrost: Poor bogan Sam is as useless as a one legged cat trying to bury a turd on a frozen lake”
Studio 10 presenter Sarah Harris also received brutal remarks about her appearance:
“@sarahharris does the best with what she’s been given, which if we’re truly honest, is not that much…just another bird on the telly with dyed blonde hair. She ain’t no Rachel McAdams!”
Former Channel Ten newsreader turned writer, commentator and media company manager Tracey Spicer seemed to cop the most brutal, violent and threatening abuse of all.
“@traceyspicer You’re not a good person & the world would be a better place if you were dead.”
“@traceyspicer: I hope your children are raped and killed, you silly c**t.”
The disbelief of their expressions as they read out that is written is testament to how utterly hurtful and harmful these kind of comments can be.
