Just as we settle in to an era of retro TV comebacks, Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham delivers some devastating news.
The 51-year-old actress says the drama isn’t likely to return for another season, adding she feels like it is designed to be a standalone series.
“I feel very satisfied. This always felt like a special, a limited series,” she tells Page Six. “I do think that’s where it ends.”
That’s not to say Lauren is moving on from her character, emotionally. She says revisiting Lorelai Gilmore was “probably the best feeling I’ll ever have as an actor.”
She adds that playing the single mum is “invigorating”.
“I would play [Lorelai] until my dying day,” she tells Deadline. “It was so invigorating and fulfilling to do that work. In terms of an actor, I would never tire of that.”
However, Lauren explains there can be too much of a good thing, and she doesn’t want Gilmore Girls to head the way of other long-lasting TV series.
“I would never want it to feel like we overstayed our welcome,” Lauren says. “There’s probably a way to keep these characters alive, but I don’t know if that’s the best thing for them.”
Her comments follow speculation the much-hyped show would return for a second instalment.
Not long after the reboot dropped on Netflix, its chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, revealed they were in “very preliminary” talks with creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino.
Plot-wise, it would make sense for another instalment.
It’s not an ending that’s likely to be forgotten but just in case: in the final scene of Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life Rory (Alexis Bledel) reveals she is pregnant and doesn’t know who the father is, leaving fans stunned.
And even Lauren admits it’s not the ending the series deserves.
“That’s not an ending, that’s a cliffhanger!” Lauren says.
Perhaps we’ll see Lorelai and Rory with her baby in tow in some other form – a movie, maybe?
As there’s no official word on what’s next for Gilmore Girls, we’ll keep hoping; we just can’t bear to think we’ve seen the last of Stars Hollow!
