It’s been two decades since Kath and Kim, the undisputed queens of Australian comedy, swept onto our screens.
Played by Gina Riley and Jane Turner, the mother-and-daughter team took us inside their life as Aussie suburban goddesses (first on the ABC and then Channel Seven), introduced us to their friends and family, and changed the way we laugh – and speak – forever.
And now, after a 10-year break, they’re back, asking us to ”Look at moi!” one more time.
Gina and Jane admit it’s been a long time between appearances, but it was easy to slip back into their famous roles.
”Kim was loving herself sick at the idea of being in front of the cameras again,” Gina, 61, tells TV WEEK.
”And for us, it was really fun to have the whole team together again. Once we got the wigs on, we quickly got back into the swing of things.”
”Kath had a sick sense she should come back,” Jane, 61, adds ”And being the 20-year anniversary of the show, it felt like the right time to say thank you to our fans.”
This time around, a few things have changed for Kath Day-Knight, her daughter Kim Diane Craig and their two bemused husbands Kel (Glenn Robbins) and Brett (Pete Rowsthorn).
Kim has somehow struck it rich, catapulting them into the Kardashians’ league, with her nails taken to the next level and Kath’s patchwork bomber jacket a sight to be seen, but can it last?
”Kim has always been effluent and, through some shady work online, she’s hit the jackpot, or so she thinks,” Gina explains. ”Now, she’s lording it over everyone.”
Throw in a collection of ”hilarious nuggets” the pair found after going through nearly 1000 tapes to showcase guest stars (including Kylie Minogue), behind-the-scenes moments and dozens of bloopers and the result is a marvellous way to farewell the iconic characters forever.
And yes, they insist that after 32 episodes between 2002 and 2007, a 2005 telemovie and a 2012 feature film (plus a US spin-off), this really is goodbye for the Foxy Ladies from Fountain Lakes.
”We wanted to mark the 20-year anniversary, the show’s success and say a proper goodbye,” the pair say.
”We’re proud of these two specials and hope everyone gets a good laugh, because we won’t be making any more.
”As Kimmy would say, ‘After this, it’s O.V.A.H. – ovah!”’
