It seems Australians are living in an era of reality television and not much else these days after the news that yet another successful Aussie drama has been axed.
Yep, Channel Nine’s House Husbands, which aired five seasons, is the latest TV series to be pulled from the network.
Hamish Turner, Nine’s program director, made the official announcement yesterday, saying that the cancellation was a result of funding issues.
The Logie-Award winning series starred Gary Sweet, Julia Morris, Rhys Muldoon and Firass Dirani, and first began airing in 2012.
“House Husbands had a great run over five seasons, and it certainly could continue with the numbers it was getting,” Hamish told TV Tonight.
“However, there is no question the 65 episode cap on the Producer Offset is a major financial hurdle for all long-running dramas. Hopefully that restriction will change.”
The news comes after Nine pulled the plug on Love Child, starring Jessica Marais.
“Love Child was still performing strongly for us through to season 4, and it continues to be extremely popular on 9Now. We love the show, but we’re also satisfied that the storylines have come to a natural conclusion after a great run,” Hamish continued.
Channel Seven’s The Secret Daughter has also reportedly been axed, and a source has told The Herald Sun that Erik Thomson’s 800 Words is “unlikely to return to the screen anytime soon.”
Better get used to reality TV from now on.
