TV legend Cornelia Frances has revealed she’s battling cancer, after finding out the confronting news from a general check-up.

The 76-year-old star, who has appeared in Sons and Daughters, Young Doctors, and Home And Away, has opened up about her health struggles. She is, however, a fighter, just as much as her fiery on-screen characters.

“I swear I have had a hex placed on me for the past 12 months,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

“I discovered I had bladder cancer. This then spread to my hip bone which fractured, and then I almost died from loss of blood due to an ulcer in my throat. Despite all this, I am still here, as the old song goes.”

Morag and Alf

As Cornelia describes it, things were touch and go for a little while.

“When I got the ulcer in my throat, I did truly believe that this time my luck had finally run out. I was a total mess according to my surgeon. He told me he didn’t believe they could get me back from the brink but somehow they did,” she said.

Cornelia revealed that her son Lawrence has been cheering her up by sneaking in McDonald’s and chocolate for her. “With the way hospital food can taste, it was a Godsend,” she said.

She’s not in remission just yet but is hoping to make an appearance this year on Home And Away for the show’s 30th birthday (Cornelia plays Alf’s sister, Morag).

“I would dearly love to go back to Summer Bay but haven’t heard anything as yet,” she said.
