Hosted by Jonathan LaPaglia, Australian Survivor is currently in production and will return to television screens later this year on Network Ten.

This year’s group of 24 contestants include an Olympian, an endurance athlete, a marriage celebrant and a special operations commander.

“Expect to see bigger and more spectacular challenges,” Stephen Tate, Head of Entertainment and Factual Programs at Network Ten tells TV WEEK.

“We have put a huge focus on the casting,” he says.

Over 20,000 people applied to be on season two of the hit reality show.

“It was the biggest application that Network Ten has ever received in its history. I worked series one and two of Australian Idol where we had to put a helicopter up to see the queue, and this exceeded that.”

Stephen admitted to TV WEEK that the challenges had to be designed after the cast were picked to make sure they weren’t too easy on the contestants.

“We had amazing options to build an incredible cast.”

“We have incredible diversity in this cast and we have upped the game. There was a beautiful naivety about the first season. We had a lot of people in the cast who hadn’t seen the show before.”

“This year the cast are going to be a little bit more knowing and the social game is going to be played a lot harder.”
