Doctor Who will have a new place to call home after the BBC announced a new partnership with Disney+ to continue the series.
With a new Doctor on the way, played by Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa, fans of the hit British show will be able to stream all new seasons exclusively on Disney+ from next year.
It sees the end of a 50-year partnership between the BBC and the ABC, the public broadcaster in Australia, and the end of the British series on free-to-air television in Australia.
The news was revealed by Ncuti during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan, with the ABC releasing a statement soon after that read:
“After a long friendship, spanning more than 50 years, the universe has called the Doctor in a different direction and Doctor Who will no longer appear on the ABC beyond the current season.”
“We are incredibly grateful to the generations of Whovians who have enjoyed Doctor Who with us on the ABC,” the statement continued.
“Everyone at the ABC wishes the Doctor well on their adventures and we hope the Time Lord will visit us again at some stage in the future.”

The move coincides with the upcoming debut of the show’s 14th Doctor as Sex Education’s Ncuti takes over from Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord.
In a statement on the official Doctor Who website, Ncuti said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.
“This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.”
It’s certainly an exciting new era for the beloved hit series, for both loyal and new Whovians alike as Doctor Who continues to grow in popularity.
According to Charlotte Moore, BBC’s Chief Content Officer, the new partnership will “elevate the show to even greater heights and reach new audiences” as it makes Doctor Who available on a global scale.
“Russell T Davies’ vision for Doctor Who has always been out of this world and we are committed to ensuring that audiences across the globe get the opportunity to enjoy the Doctor’s epic adventures with the scale and ambition that they deserve,” she said.
Doctor Who joins an ever-growing catalogue of global content on Disney+, including titles from Star Wars, Marvel, National Geographic and more.
Whovians can sign up for the streaming service for just $11.99 a month to watch the show and all the other exclusive content right here.
