The host of Gardening Australia star is nominated alongside Amanda Keller, Rodger Corser, Eve Morey, Sam Mac, Tom Gleeson and Waleed Aly.

While the gardening guru has been a fixture on our screens for many years, this is the first time he has been nominated for a TV WEEK Logie Award – and he’s gone straight to gold!

The lifestyle program has also been nominated for Most Popular Lifestyle Program, which celebrates its 30th season on the ABC, was originally hosted by Peter Cundall and Stephan Ryan. But in 2012, Costa picked up the mantel and changed the entire landscape, so to speak.

“Television is such a reactive space and can be ruthless when it comes to longevity and survival of a show,” he tells TV WEEK. “So its amazing recognition that Gardening Australia has been able to adapt and keep providing entertainment for an audience – and for this long.

“I didn’t want to replicate what was successful for Peter and the team before me, or even attempt to replace what he had done. It was about what the audience wants now and helping tap into that.”

As a qualified landscape architect and a grandfather in the business, Costa was well equipped to lead the team. During his studies at University, however, Costa took his knowledge overseas. For the best part of a decade, he worked on roof top gardens, ponds and wetlands in some of the world’s most desirable places; Vienna, Austria and Bavaria.

Not only did his passion for gardening expand, but so did his beard! Costa reveals that the hair is a result of falling ill whilst travelling in Egypt and letting it continue to grow ever since.

Costa is no stranger to television sets either. A self-confessed clown, he made his TV debut as part of a talent quest in Hey Hey, Its Saturday!, as well as a skit in The Ray Martin Show in the late ’80s.
