Charlie Goldsmith: A healer or a hoax?

He’s Olivia Newton John’s nephew and Miranda Kerr is his biggest fan, but is he the real deal?

Charlie Goldsmith has certainly made waves in the world of alternative medicine and—thanks to multiple interviews in the mainstream media—catalysed heated debates about just how genuine his claims are.

We’ve of course seen this type of healing before, normally in the halls of a church with grand spectacles in which blind men see, deaf women hear and children leap out of wheelchairs. But Goldsmith’s method is quieter and more soothing than the elaborate Christian faith healings we’ve seen out of the U.S.

So, ahead of Sunday Night‘s investigation, who is this Australian healer with his own show on TLC?

Who is Charlie Goldsmith?

Goldsmith is based in Melbourne and actually earns his money through his job as the Managing Director at Cassette, a creative communications agency he founded at 19, as well as his other self-founded business, Pumpy Jackson, a clean, sugar-free brand of chocolate.

Goldsmith is adamant about not charging for his healing work—a talent he discovered at 18-years-old. Traditional faith healers in superstitious countries like Ireland also believe it immoral to demand payment for their “gift”.

Goldsmith also comes from pretty famous stock. His older sister is actress and singer Tottie Goldsmith and his aunt is none other than Olivia Newton John.

Does his healing work?

Goldsmith has been the subject of two studies—both of which conducted by academics not from scientific background— about his “energy-based healing”, one of which is still underway.

In the first study—which must be noted, was published in non-scientific The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine—he treated reports of pain at 76 per cent success rate and reports of non-pain problems at a 79 per cent success rate.

However, at just 50 and 29 respectively, these sample sizes are phenomenally small and would be difficult to extrapolate to a definite healer status.

Goldsmith admitted to Forbes he doesn’t know why or how his “healing” appears to help some people.

“I don’t try and explain why I can because I don’t have the knowledge. What I am more focused on is that I can—and I am very happy to demonstrate that.”

Who are Charlie Goldsmith’s famous clients?

Olivia Newton John

The most prominent, and obvious, patient of Goldsmith’s patients is his aunt.

“I have worked on her in the past. Of course, she’s been through it all before and she’s very knowledgeable in that area,” he told New Idea.

“She’s got really great access to lots of different things, access to lots of different interventions—from natural to conventional— so she’s well equipped, better than most.”

Miranda Kerr

Miranda and her mum are well-known for their love of alternative medicines. The model has known Goldsmith for over a decade and has openly supported his work in the past.

“Since I met Charlie he’s helped not only me but also my family and friends countless times,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

“Amazingly, it doesn’t seem to matter what it is medically. What he does really works. I can’t say I understand how exactly but it’s truly incredible.”

In the most episode of his TV show, Goldsmith helps the Dirty Dancing alum with chronic neck pain she’s endured since a catastrophic car accident.

“I’ve never experienced anything like what Charlie is capable of,” she said. “I hope everyone gets to see this show because it is truly impossible to understand, but it is undeniable when you see it.”

“Charlie’s gift will certainly be looked back on, and in no uncertain terms, as the real deal. I will probably never understand what I’ve seen, but I feel honoured to have been a part of it.”

Goldsmith revealed 300 star, Gerard Butler, is a supportive fan of his energy medicine and that he treated the star while filming his show.

“I treated some issues and he was kind enough to write the support letter for me to go to the US, and he let the producers film him while I treated him for a pilot for the show,” Goldsmith told New Idea. “He’s always been really supportive of me and my work… a firm believer in healing.”

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star reveals to Goldsmith on the show she’s battling fibromyalgia—a common and chronic syndrome that causes bodily pain and mental distress.

“Just him sitting next to me — not doing anything with this hands — next thing I know, I start feeling this warm, tingling sensation that goes through the area that bothers me the most,” Richards says in a preview clip of the episode.

The actress is still suffering from the chronic pain of fibromyalgia.

The healer received intense backlash from the public after his appearance on Interview with Andrew Denton last week. It will be interesting to see the reaction to his episode of Sunday Night.
