The original queen of news is back this week with the return of Murphy Brown.
And while it’s been two decades since four-time Emmy Award-winning actress Candice Bergen starred in the show, she says she feels more self-assured than ever.
“Do I have stuff that’s breaking down? Yes, but I’ve never felt more alive. And I’ve never felt more me, more confident, and more Murphy, actually. I feel like time is very valuable,” Candice, 72, tells TV WEEK.
Candice believes now is the ideal time for Murphy’s comeback given the current divisions in US politics.
“There are many people who are so frustrated and distressed by what has been happening to this country,” Candice says. “Murphy Brown is not only about that, but it certainly speaks to that without timidity.”
The new series will see Murphy step out of retirement and into the hot seat of her brand-new morning news show, Murphy In The Morning, which she hopes will bring back some “truthfulness” to the media.
Candice also admits getting back together with her former co-stars was an emotional experience for everyone.
“We’re all so happy to be working together again, I can’t tell you,” the actress says.
“And to see all the pieces of this coming back together when we walked onto the sound stage in Queens [in New York] and saw Murphy’s townhouse and Phil’s bar reassembled exactly as they were in Burbank on the Warner Brothers lot, all of us had tears in our eyes.
“Then on the first reading with all the writers and people from Warner Brothers and CBS, it was thrilling. But for me it was more emotional; very moving.”
Murphy Brown airs Monday, 8:30pm, on Network 10.
