The first trailer for the highly-anticipated second season of Big Little Lies has finally arrived, and the lives of the mothers of Monterey are looking rather grim.
Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) and Renata (Laura Dern) are back, and struggling with the consequences of that murderous night at the school’s trivia fundraiser.
As viewers saw at the end of the first season, the women covered up the fact that Bonnie pushed Celeste’s abusive husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) down the stairs, as he attacked his wife.
Now referred to by the public as the “Monterey Five” the women are shown to be buckling under the pressure of public scrutiny, and the arrival of Perry’s mother Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) is bound to cause chaos.
“We’re kidding ourselves if we think people have stopped talking,” Celeste tells the other women in the trailer.
“It’s gonna get us, it’s gonna get us all,” a guilt-ridden Bonnie tells Madeline of their lies.
Meanwhile, Mary Louise seems set on finding out the truth about the night of Perry’s death, revealing she does not believe the women’s version of events.
“My son is dead,” Mary Louise confronts Madeline. “I want to know what happened that night. I’m very tempted to ask you but I don’t think I would get the truth, would I?”
Big Little Lies Season Two premieres June 9, on HBO in the US. Though an Australian air date is yet to be confirmed, the series will likely air at a similar time on Foxtel’s Showcase.
