Three seasons down and Better Call Saul fans are still wondering how long they’ll have to wait before the show crosses over into Breaking Bad territory.
The good news is: no longer.
“More and more in season four, the Breaking Bad world is coming into play,” show co-creator Vince Gilligan, 51, says of the new season. “And the overlap between the two increases with every episode.”
And that means more of Jimmy McGill’s transformation into the slickster Saul Goodman.
“I’m amazed where we’re at,” Bob Odenkirk, 55, who plays Jimmy, says. “We just made our best season ever.”
Show-runner Peter Gould is just as enthusiastic.
“People who have loved Breaking Bad will be very pleased by this season of Better Call Saul,” he says.
So what can we expect from season four? We do know…
CHUCK IS DEAD:
The story picks up where season three’s tragic finale left off, when Chuck (Michael McKean) set his own house alight while he was still inside. For sceptical fans insisting Chuck is still alive, Bob asserts: “He’s very dead.”
This season explores Jimmy’s guilt about his final clash with his brother before his suicide.
IT’S DARKER:
As well as Jimmy’s psychological state, his world becomes increasingly dark and violent, and his relationship with Kim (Rhea Seehorn) is put to the test.
“As Walter White [Breaking Bad’s central character, played by Bryan Cranston] got worse and worse, he became less of his good self,” Vince explains. “It seems to be the case with Jimmy now too.”
SAUL EMERGES:
It’s no surprise Jimmy is on a spiral to becoming “worse”, as we know he ends up being Walter White’s dodgy attorney in Breaking Bad. But we’ll finally get clues as to how he wound up there.
“We start to understand something we’ve been struggling with ever since we started the show: how does Jimmy McGill become Saul Goodman?” Peter says. “This is the season where you start to really understand how a man transforms in such a radical way.”
WHO WE MEET:
A character from Breaking Bad who was only ever name-dropped comes to the fore.
Lalo, portrayed by Tony Dalton, will be a major player, but writers are keeping mum on his purpose.
For everything we do know, there is more left to be uncovered by the series. Here is everything we DON’T know…
WHO LALO IS:
All we know of Lalo comes from Saul’s debut episode in Breaking Bad, when he’s dragged to the desert by Walter and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) to be interrogated. He mistakes them for “Lalo”, and the name is never uttered again – until now.
“He’s a powerful presence,” Bob teases. “It’s going to amp up the show a couple of notches when he joins halfway through the season.”
WHO RETURNS:
While Peter confirms we’ll learn “a lot” about Breaking Bad’s “beloved” characters, their identities are under wraps for now.
“Characters who we never thought we would see again will come back this season,” he reveals.
WHERE JESSE STANDS:
Better Call Saul has already welcomed the return of Breaking Bad characters Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) and Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks).
Rumours are swirling that Jesse – Walter’s partner in the meth trade in Breaking Bad – could be next.
“I would never want to leave out Jesse,” Vince says. “He’s a fantastic character.”
WHEN WALTER APPEARS:
We haven’t been told when, but it’ll be major when he does.
“We’d like it to have meaning,” Peter says. “Though Jimmy and Walter probably didn’t meet face-to-face before we saw them in Breaking Bad, their worlds could overlap in an interesting way.”
Better Call Saul Season 4 is set to air 10 new episodes on Stan., every Tuesday from August 7th.
