At 48, Welsh-born Spencer Jones has a good decade – or two – on fellow The Voice finalists.
But despite his professional experience, which has seen him perform with rock legends such as Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden, Spencer says his confidence has often taken a bit of a hit.
Ironically, it’s his younger competitors who are helping him get it back.
“I’ve learnt a lot from the younger girls and guys,” the father-of-two tells TV WEEK.
“You’re never too old to learn new tricks. Younger people are just so confident.
“I think sometimes, with age, the fear of rejection and the knockbacks in life can hinder you a bit. You get apprehensive of pushing yourself and taking on new challenges.”
Not so anymore. Declaring The Voice the best thing he’s ever done for himself, Spencer wants viewers to take away a simple message.
Namely, that it doesn’t matter what number you turned on your last birthday – you need to follow his lead and put yourself on the line.
“If it’s your personal passion, something you’ve always wanted to do, or if you just want to get uncomfortable and challenge yourself, just give it a go,” he advises.
