Rapper Denzel has been causing a stir on The Voice Australia this year as controversy mounts over whether the artist should be allowed to perform originals while his rivals are forced to sing cover songs.
But someone who knows better than most about what it’s like to deal with the backlash is last year’s winner Sam Perry.
Sam, a loop artist from Perth, took out the competition as part of Team Kelly – but not before dealing with criticism from fans and coaches alike.
In intense scenes on the Channel Nine show last year, coach Boy George took umbrage at Sam’s inclusion on the show, telling him “It’s called The Voice, not The Technology.”
This year, it was Denzel who as the centre of Boy George’s ire, when the Culture Club singer unleashed on Kelly Rowland and accused her of “cheating” when she gave permission to Denzel to perform his own rap.
Denzel is this year’s most controversial artist.

“I’ve been chatting to him. We’ve just been chatting,” Sam says.
“I saw a couple of his posts saying ‘how you do you deal with the onslaught of people?'” Sam says.
“I messaged him in public and said, ‘You’ll be right mate!’ That’s all you need to know!”

Boy George and Sam Perry clashed on The Voice, but there was no bad blood at the 2019 TV WEEK Logie Awards on Sunday.

“I toured Australia which went really well, I sold out most of my shows, it was amazing to see so many fans come out,” he says.
“I’ve been working on a bunch on music behind closed doors. I rebranded the YouTube channel, so from Wednesday next week, we’re launching a new video, a new art piece each week.”
And fans don’t need to worry about not getting their fix of Sam Perry, with the former reality TV star adding: “It’s going to be an onslaught of looping videos!”
