He’s the natural showman who was a standout contender during the 2015 season of The Voice.
Now, Caleb Jago-Ward is back to claim his crown, but, he admits, he wasn’t always the confident performer he is today.
“For me, coming out as gay at 16 was difficult,” Caleb tells TV WEEK.
“Take Christian parents, a Catholic upbringing and a bible load of shame and you’ve got it about right.”
Caleb adds that “while I was pretty lucky to mostly escape the wrath of bullies in school,” growing up in a world in “which felt like it didn’t include me meant the emotional backpack you’re hauling just gets heavier.”
Caleb says he found his confidence – and his voice – in new experiences “I overcame, and in all honesty continue to overcome, feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness by trying new things,” he says.
“Like a new pair of shoes or heels. Playing drag roles in like Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Hidden Sydney and We Will Rock You has changed my perspective on sexuality and myself immeasurably, for the better. Plus it’s great fun.”
In the spirit of embracing new experiences, Caleb’s returning to The Voice as an all-star. “It’s super cool to be invited back onto the rollercoaster that is The Voice,” he says.
“It terrifying and exciting all at once but that good recipe tells you you’re doing the right thing.”
As for what he’s bringing to The Voice this time around, Caleb says he’s “more centred, older, wiser – and hopefully prettier!”
