Week one of The Block is off to a rocky start, with Steph and Gian of House Four buckling under the pressure of renovating a 1950s-era retro home in the Melbourne suburb of Hampton East.
All five teams are tasked with building a studio bathroom.
But with House Four the only studio that didn’t originally have a bathroom, it’s extra-stressful for the Sydney couple.
“I did see it had become too much for Steph a few times during the week and her break down,” Gian, 27, tells TV WEEK.
“At one point under the pressure of everything happening on site, my heart just melted seeing her cry and I shed a tear too.”
On top of the design elements that are failing them, disagreements with their building team – plus tensions brewing with rival Blockheads Leah of House Two and Kristy of House Three – serve to “overwhelm” Steph further.
“To put it plainly, it was traumatising,” Steph, 27, says. Leah and Kristy form an alliance on site early on and clash with Steph from the outset.
Watching the show back this week, Steph says she’s willing to “give them some grace”, considering the two women hadn’t really got to know her yet.
Despite the bumpy first week, Gian and Steph’s bond remains strong.
“We learned so much in such a short period that, if anything, the experience made our relationship stronger,” Steph says.
“We never really looked at each other like the other was the problem.”
