He has a smile that lights up the screen, but for LEGO Masters contestant Scott, the road to happiness hasn’t always been easy.
“When I was 21, I went through a dark patch in my life,” WA electrician Scott, 26, tells TV WEEK.
“When you come out of high school, you think the world is going to be just as easy, but it turns out it’s not. I wanted to end it all.”
Scott reached out to a trusted confidante, but when that person spread rumours about him around town, he lost faith in those around him.
“I felt like I couldn’t trust anybody,” he says.
“I had no-one to turn to and was at the stage where I thought, ‘What’s the point of living?'”
When a colleague noticed Scott was down, he took him under his wing, and soon the young man realised his challenges were actually helping him.
“It’s like a bow and arrow,” he explains.
“If you don’t draw the arrow back, it can’t fly very far. The further you pull back the arrow, the further it goes. Life is the bow and you’re the arrow – the more hardships you overcome, the stronger you become.”
With a fresh outlook, Scott became determined to pursue his passions no matter what anyone thought of him.
“I spent my whole childhood and teen years worrying what people thought of me, because I’m a bit different,” he says.
“Eventually, I realised that I’m the only person who can control my life. No-one else’s opinion really matters. I just want to be happy with me.”
So when Scott’s best friend Owen asked him to apply to be on LEGO Masters with him, he eagerly accepted – even though he’d barely touched LEGO bricks since he was a kid.
“Owen said to me, ‘You’ve got what a LEGO builder has – that insight and bit of creativity,'” he recalls.
With their cheeky banter and playful attitude, the duo made it onto the show. And now, surrounded by LEGO enthusiasts, Scott admits he’s been swept up in the excitement of building.
“I’ve immersed myself in the world and fallen in love with it,” he enthuses.
