Best friends since primary school, Amber and Mel say they’ve never turned up to a party uninvited in their lives.
But as one of three teams of gatecrashers, that’s what the two NSW mums are doing in My Kitchen Rules this week.
“It was definitely nerve-racking but there was a bit of excitement in there as well,” Mel, 41, tells TV WEEK.
“Both Amber and I like to get on with people so we did want to break down some of those gatecrasher barriers and be like, ‘We’re not the mean girls, we’re actually quite nice.'”
That said, Amber – mother to Abby, 15, Phoebe, 13, and Eve, 11 – and Mel – mother to Matilda, 12, and Willow, eight – are in it to win it.
“I’m a high achiever in life, in work, in everything that I do,” Mel, who works in marketing, explains. “So definitely we went in with the intention to do the best, to be the best, and yeah, to ultimately win.”
As for Amber, 42, a hairdressing teacher, she admits she has a slightly competitive side that comes out sometimes when she takes her daughters to dance competitions.
“Because, of course, my kids are the best,” she laughs.
For Amber and Mel, leaving their families behind to compete in MKR involved “huge sacrifices”. But their daughters fully supported them.
“Our girls were our biggest cheerleaders,” Amber says proudly. “The posters that they made for us, the text messages… They would message us and say, ‘You guys have got this, we love you,'” she says.
