For most people, being flanked by Dannii Minogue, Lindsay Lohan and Jackie O sounds like a dream come true. But for Dave Hughes, who sat alongside the glamorous women on the guessing panel of The Masked Singer, it turned out to be quite the opposite.
The comedian, 48, tells TV WEEK that the three women kept in touch when the cameras stopped rolling. But he wasn’t included…
“Dannii Minogue, Jackie O and Lindsay Lohan kept talking about this WhatsApp group that they were part of,” he explains.
“I didn’t get invited to be part of the WhatsApp group and I felt quite left out. Apparently they were doing late-night back-and-forth checking of clues and I was left to my own devices. I would have loved to have been in the WhatsApp group.”
So it’s no surprise then that, without the help of his fellow panellists, Dave guessed the identity of only one of the 12 singers correctly.
“There were some absolute shocks when the masks came off!” he admits. “You go, ‘What the hell! No way! I can’t believe it!’ Which is what you want. It’s like the presents under the Christmas tree when you’re a kid.”
Although Dave wasn’t part of the ladies’ group chat, he did get invited on a few big nights out, including one particularly memorable occasion where Mean Girls actress Lindsay took the panel to Sydney’s The Star casino.
“I really did feel like I was in Hollywood,” Dave recalls. “We had a private area in the nightclub there.
“It was me, Lindsay Lohan, Dannii Minogue, Jackie O and Lindsay’s makeup artist – who used to be Madonna’s makeup artist – all dancing around with glowsticks. I thought, ‘I have finally made it!'”
The Masked Singer airs Monday and Tuesday, 7.30pm, on Network 10.
