The first Married At First Sight episode for 2023 delivers a huge wedding-day bombshell. But there’s more to the story than the episode shows.
MAFS‘ 10th season kicks off with the wedding of Bronte, an online beauty educator from WA.
Bronte is 28 and has never had “that big love story”.
She tells TV WEEK she felt “so lost, so confused” in her early twenties, and was hurt “many times” by men she was dating.
“I’ve admitted to letting guys walk all over me because I didn’t know my worth,” she says.
In recent years, Bronte says, she’s done all her “healing”.
She goes into her MAFS wedding ready to find love, and is thrilled with her groom when she walks up the aisle to meet him.
“There was instant chemistry,” she says.
“It was like there was nobody else in the room. It was everything I’d hoped for.”
But at the reception, Bronte’s friend Jess – who viewers may recognise from another of this year’s reality shows, The Bachelors – pulls her aside. Jess has something to tell her about her new husband, and there’s photographic evidence on Jess’ phone.
“As soon as I saw what was on that phone, my heart sank,” Bronte says.
“I could not have been more upset. That sadness quickly turned into anger.”
She says she felt like ending the marriage right there at the reception.
“Every fibre of my being wanted to leg it,” she remembers.
“My mum was crying on my wedding day. She was so devastated for me. I didn’t even get to eat my cake.”
As furious as she was with her new groom at the reception, Bronte also found herself questioning Jess’ motives in dropping the bombshell the way she did.
“Look, it’s one of those things where I want to believe she did it with pure intentions,” she says. “But the fact is, she didn’t have to get miked up to tell me that.”
As if the wedding day drama wasn’t huge enough, there’s more to come.
Not long after the wedding, Bronte finds out something about Jess that makes her view the whole bombshell situation a little differently.
“We are no longer friends,” Bronte reveals.
