But after a tumultuous couple of years, and a tear-inducing turn on Iโ€™m A Celebrityโ€ฆ Get Me Out Of Here! the 29-year-old gold medallist is ready to open up about it for the first time.

โ€œWe were really deep in it โ€“ well, I thought we were deep. I had such a hard time getting over that break-up.

โ€œIt really took a lot of my confidence and thatโ€™s where, I think, my eating disorder came from,โ€ she tells Womanโ€™s Day.

Rumours Mitch, 28, had cheated first emerged weeks after the couple of two years, whoโ€™d owned a property together, announced their shock split, with reports focusing on supposed messages Emily had found from another woman on their swimming squad on his phone.

โ€œOh, I found messages, yes,โ€ Emily reiterates. โ€œHe may look like Clark Kent, but heโ€™s no Superman.โ€

โ€œWe had some really great times together, but heโ€™s never apologised and thatโ€™s where my anger comes from.

โ€œAn apology goes a long way, it mends the bridges, but they were never mended โ€“ they were burned.โ€

After their break-up, Mitch vehemently denied cheating on Emily, telling The Courier-Mail in 2018 that he was โ€œblindsidedโ€ by the accusations.

โ€œI absolutely did not cheat. Breaking up with her was one of the hardest things I could do,โ€ he said.

Emily says the pair are still not on speaking terms, despite having to work together.

โ€œOh, we still have to see each other because weโ€™re on the same [swimming] team, but itโ€™s just silence whenever weโ€™re around each other,โ€ she says.

โ€œWe have a mutual agreement never to talk to each other again. Never talk, and never look at each other. It works out pretty well to be honest.โ€

Emily is now in a new relationship, and while she wants to keep this one out of the headlines, she sees big things for them.

โ€œHeโ€™s the nicest guy Iโ€™ve ever met,โ€ she gushes. โ€œIโ€™m the happiest Iโ€™ve ever been. I canโ€™t imagine my life without him.โ€

Emily says that motherhood has even crossed her mind, saying sheโ€™s ready to have kids โ€œsooner rather than laterโ€ due to her battle with endometriosis.

โ€œI would love to have kids, but Iโ€™m not sure how hard my endometriosis is going to make it for me,โ€ she tells.

The backstroke master tells Womanโ€™s Day that sheโ€™s the happiest sheโ€™s ever been with her new man โ€“ but sheโ€™s intent on keeping this one of out the spotlight.

โ€œSome people have to do IVF or canโ€™t have them at all, so itโ€™s just a matter for me of finding the right time and giving it a go.

โ€œI would love to, I donโ€™t think itโ€™s up to me, itโ€™s up to my body.โ€

With a new life, new love and perhaps motherhood on the horizon, Emily says sheโ€™s entered a different realm emotionally, which she credits largely to Iโ€™m A Celebrity.

โ€œMy partner watched the first episode with me and I think heโ€™s seen me cry twice, and once was in a movie, and after he asked, โ€˜Who are you?โ€™ And I told him, โ€˜I donโ€™t know, Iโ€™m a different person,'โ€ she reveals.

โ€œAthletes have this tough persona that when you break down and cry, a lot of people say, โ€˜Toughen up, this is your jobโ€™, so itโ€™s almost like you canโ€™t be a normal person, but I wanted to be as open as I could be.

โ€œIโ€™m more vulnerable than I ever have been on this show,โ€ she says.

The gifted swimmer, whoโ€™s already opened up to the camp about her struggles with an eating disorder and the pressures of being a young Olympic athlete, says her experience was so profound that it may lead her away from sport altogether.

โ€œI was going to retire, I wasnโ€™t sure what I was going to do, so itโ€™ll be interesting to see where this show will take me, whether it takes me back to the pool or if it takes me into a different direction,โ€ says Emily.
