Now, Drew is speaking out about the pair’s on-screen relationship.

“Laurence is looking for a rise,” the 49-year-old Sydneysider explains. “He’s an experienced, sophisticated professional in television and I’m not.

“So I think sometimes he believes it’s kind of fun to play with me.”

Drew thinks fellow judge Laurence is just ‘looking for a rise.’

The award-winning architect insists the flamboyant Brit’s pronouncements don’t get to him.

“Honestly, I’m very durable,” Drew says. “The stuff Laurence sometimes throws at me doesn’t stick.”

In fact, behind the scenes, Drew says Laurence is a completely different person and “a lot of fun”.

“He realises there can be dull moments standing around waiting for stuff to happen, so he fills the gaps,” Drew adds.

This is Drew’s second year as a judge on House Rules. He admits he’s still not used to being on camera.

“I was petrified in the first season,” he explains. “Only towards the end did I get used to the hair and make-up and all the people standing in front of you, waiting for you to perform.”

House Rules judges Drew, Laurence and Wendy Moore with host Johanna Griggs.

He says there are still times he wonders why he agreed to be on TV.

“I go through moments of thinking, ‘Oh, my God – why am I here? Why am I doing this?'” Drew says.

“But then once you get into the swing of it, you start talking about something you love.”

At the end of the day, Drew says despite any disagreements with Laurence, he’s on House Rules to do a job.

“I just stick to my modernist principles, my natural materials, the use of light and ventilation,” he declares. “I’m comfortable with that.”
