Di Kershaw’s husband Mick has opened up about his wife’s final days, following the sudden news the Gogglebox star had died of throat cancer.

Speaking publicly for the first time since losing his wife, the 77-year-old made it clear that Di passed on her own terms.

“The cancer spread and was inoperable. The only alternative to that was chemo or radiation but she was far too weak to be put through that,” he told the Daily Mail.

“She would have hated to sit around here for six months being incapacitated. So she made the decision to end it earlier rather than later.”

Di and Mick were married for over 50 years.

Di was diagnosed after an inoperable tumour was discovered in her throat. She was treated at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital for nine weeks before spending a further two in hospice.

Her decision to keep her illness private and forego chemotherapy and radiation treatments was one made with her family in mind, Mick said.

“Part of that decision was thinking about us. A big part of that decision was not wanting to put us through that,” he revealed.

He and Di have two adult children and a grandson, who will rally around Mick as he mourns his wife of more than 50 years.

The news of her passing broke on Monday, with Peter Ford revealing Di’s sad death after a short illness live on radio.

“She’s been sick sadly for a couple of months now, so condolences to Mick and the entire family.

“She was great talent – the producers struck gold when they found her,” he said.

Her Gogglebox family then led a flood of tributes to the late TV star, who had been a hit on the show for years.

Angie Kent penned: “Devastating news. Sending so much love to her family and friends and GB [Gogglebox] fam. What a fire cracker she was! A big loss.”

She and her Gogglebox co-star Yvie Jones then shared a joint tribute to Di, who was one of the few remaining original cast members still on the show.

“Very saddened to hear this morning that fellow Gogglebox member Di has passed away. She was such a force,” the duo wrote.
