Big Brother Australia has reportedly been cancelled, and will not return to our screens in 2024.
Channel 7 hasn’t made any official announcements yet, but according to TV Blackbox, Big Brother will definitely not be returning in 2024.
The 2023 season of Big Brother, called the ‘House of Love’, diverted from the show’s original concept and focused more on love and romance between the contestants, making it seem more like a dating show.
Fans of Big Brother didn’t receive this format change overly well, and the show recorded its worst ratings and views to date.
When it aired last year, Big Brother was bumped from the primetime 7.30pm timeslot to a later time on Channel 7 after just one week on air.
The show did perform relatively well on streaming but even then, the finale only garnered 152,000 overnight viewers.
Big Brother aired its fifteenth season in Australia in 2023, but fans of the original concept don’t seem to have enjoyed the revamped format.
Since the show has been picked up by Channel 7, viewers in Australia have been vocal about their desire for Big Brother to return to its original format, which includes the show being broadcast live.
The desire for Big Brother to once again be shown live is further backed by fans thanks to the same thing occurring in the UK.
Recently, ITV brought back the original series after being off air for many years in Britain. Big Brother returned to its original live format in the UK and enjoyed success, so Australian viewers are hoping for the same thing to happen here.
Despite being cancelled for 2024, TV Blackbox reports that there “may be plans to return the once popular reality series to its original live format should the network decide to return the show in 2025, though we understand any formal decision on that has yet to be made.”
So, Big Brother fans, don’t lose hope just yet as the show may return to Australian screens again in 2025.
