Finding love should be easy when you’re a handsome, intelligent, astrophysicist, but somehow Matt Agnew has been single since the end of 2017.
“That was when my last serious relationship ended,” he tells OK!.
So what’s a lonely boy to do? Apply for The Bachelor, of course!

“I decided to go for it because this show has a really great strike rate when it comes to finding love for people,” explains Matt, who is the first non-returnee or celebrity lead Bachelor since 2015 – an absolute breath of fresh air!
And Matt’s not here to play, he’s ready to settle down as well!
“I’m here to find the person I want to marry and the person I want to start a family with,’ the 31-year-old shares.
Sounds like Matt’s a man on a mission!
Who is Matt Agnew’s family?
Matt is the youngest of four, and his two brothers and sister are blown away that their “little Matty” is looking for love on national TV.
“It’s definitely out of my comfort zone,” says Matt.
The Melbournian grew up in Adelaide, before relocating to Perth when he was in year 7.
As a kid, Matt says he was ‘a nerdy extrovert’. Not to mention cute, too!
Now, as the new season fast approaches, we thought it high time to ask our new bachelor a few questions about what he’s thinking ahead of the show.
Keep scrolling for our exclusive Q&A with Aussies most eligible man (for now!).
OK!: Are you working on a time frame when it comes to love? When do you see yourself settling down?
Matt: Within the next 12 months would be good. That’s 100 per cent what I’m hoping for.
Are kids part of your plan, too?
Matt: One day, yes, for sure. I wouldn’t mind little folk of my own. I’m from a bigger family so I lean towards having two or three kids of my own, but that would be up to my partner, too, of course!
I think being a dad will be really fun.
Do you think you’ll propose at the end of The Bachelor?
Matt: You never know! You’ll have to wait and see – I can say no more.
Have you received any advice from previous Bachies about what to expect on the show?
Matt: Not yet, but I do intend to reach out and get some tips. Those other guys – Tim, Matty J and Nick for example – are the only ones who know exactly what I’m about to go through, and I’m sure they could tell me a few things they wish they’d known beforehand.
I’m someone who takes on board info from those who are more experienced than myself, so I’d definitely be keen to hear from any of those guys.
What do you look for in a relationship?
Matt: Someone to share an incredible connection with; someone to have fun with – I like to think I’m a lot of fun!
That could entail catching the northern lights in Scandinavia or cuddling up on the couch on a rainy night.
Who doesn’t love cosying up at home and sharing a bottle of red and a cheese platter?! I’m happy to do the wild stuff or the cosy nights in, so long as it’s with the right person.

Would you be willing to move for love?
Matt: I’m based in Melbourne these days, but relocating is something I’m very open to.
I’ve lived in three cities around Australia and I’ve lived overseas in London, Berlin, Buenos Aires and Sweden. Moving for me is not a deal-breaker.
It’s something I’m very open to and something that I hope my partner will be open to as well. It’s one of those decisions I’d hope we’d navigate together if it was necessary.
How hard will it be for you to send girls home during rose ceremonies?
Matt: So hard! All I can do is assess the connection I have with them and base my decisions on that.
But I don’t think it’ll be easy. I don’t want to hurt anyone, and so I’ll just have to figure out how to do it in the most compassionate way.
What did your friends and family say when they found out you were going to be the next Bachelor?
Matt: I’m pretty extroverted, but it was still a massive surprise to everyone that I’d do something as out there as this.
My parents especially had their concerns. They were worried about how it might impact my career and how I’d go with suddenly being this very public person.
After their initial reservations, they looked into the show a bit more and found out about the successful relationships – and babies! – that have come from it and then they got really excited.
What about your work colleagues?
Matt: Doing a reality TV show is not the norm for someone who works in academia, but everyone is being really supportive – even if my colleagues aren’t typical fans of The Bachelor!
I had no idea how this would be received by my co-workers, but everyone has been so supportive and excited.
They’re wishing me luck and saying that they hope I find what I’m looking for. It’s been really wonderful.
How are you still single?!
Matt: Until now it’s been a case of wrong time, wrong place. I’ve had a couple of serious relationships that haven’t worked out because I’ve been a bit too focused on my career.
I’ve also had some fun dates via Tinder, too. But now I’m in a place where I’m ready to meet The One.
I’m someone who loves to have adventure in my life and this experience is sure going to be one hell of an adventure for me!
