“It was the witching hour when the boogie man comes out, when people go missing” the live-action trailer begins.
The BFG aka The Big Friendly Giant tells the story of a young girl named Sophie and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.
Together, the BFG and Sophie must convince the Queen of England to get rid of the giants once and for all. That is, once they succeed in convincing her royal highness that giants even exist.
Taking on the role of Sophie will be British newcomer, 11-year-old Ruby Barnhill. She’ll be joined by British actor Mark Rylance, 55, who’ll step into the role of our friendly giant.
SNL alum Bill Hader and funnyman, Jemaine Clement will stretch out their comedic socks portraying the novel’s villainous giants, Bloodbottler and Fleshlumpeater, respectively.
The film will also get the royal treatment with Penelope Wilton from Downton Abbey playing the Queen, while Rebecca Hall of Vicky Cristina Barcelona fame will step into the role of her maid.
Steven Spielberg directed the film while Melissa Mathison, who sadly passed away in November, wrote the screenplay.
It’s set to be a hit considering the popularity of the book and the fact Steven and Melissa worked together on the 1982 classic, E.T.
The BFG hits cinemas next year.
