In what could possibly be called the greatest news ever, both Josh Lucas and Reese Witherspoon have expressed interest in a Sweet Home Alabama sequel!

Arguably the greatest romantic comedy of all time, Sweet Home Alabama follows Melanie Smooter (Reese Witherspoon), a fancy designer from New York City who returns to Alabama to divorce her estranged husband, Jake Perry (Josh Lucas), so she can marry her new fiancé Andrew Hennings (Patrick Dempsey).

Of course, it’s a romantic comedy, and nothing goes to Melanie’s original (super beige) plan and she ends up back in Alabama with the love of her life, Jake.

Plus, the movie is responsible for the world’s weirdest and most hilarious line ‘If I’d known company was coming, I’d have put on the dog!’

Anyway, back to the point! Josh Lucas appeared on U.S. lifestyle show The Talk earlier this week, where he revealed he is interested in doing Sweet Home Alabama 2.

“I think it would be so fascinating,” Josh says. “Obviously I don’t know where it would go, but I think it would be so fascinating to see where these two characters and the children and where everyone ended up. Are they still together? Are they divorced? Do they want to be back together?

“I mean, there’s so many different ideas that I think, you know, we all know life is long and complex and they had an interesting relationship to begin with, the two characters.

“The fact that they were together from when they were children, I would love to see what’s going on 20 years later,” he says.

If you’re wondering what Reese thinks of a sequel idea, back in 2016 the actress told fans she would love to reprise the role of Melanie.

“We are not making a sequel that I know of, but if Disney wants to make a sequel they can just call me,” Reese said. “I would happily make Sweet Home Alabama 2.”

We already know Reese is keen on re-booting her old projects, as she’s currently in the process of filming Legally Blonde 3.

Fans will just have to keep their fingers crossed for a Sweet Home Alabama sequel, too.
