American actor Shia LaBoeuf has been arrested for assault

The 30-year-old actor was handcuffed and hauled away by law enforcement as onlookers filmed the climactic moment.

Shia LaBeouf, who has appeared in films such as Disturbia and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, was arrested in New York early Thursday during a protest against President Donald Trump.

According to a spokesperson at the New York Police Department, the actor and performance artist allegedly engaged in a verbal altercation with another protester before attacking the 25-year-old man, pulling on his scarf and scratching his face while doing so.

Shia was subsequently handcuffed and escorted away from the building crowds.

In video footage, which was captured by Shia’s own livestream camera, his supporters continue to chant boldly, “He will not divide us!” as he is hauled away.

The Fury actor, who has a history of alarming behavior and a string of arrests for minor offenses, has since been charged with misdemeanor assault and with harassment. He has also been issued a desk appearance ticket with the instruction to come to court on April 4.

He was not jailed.

The incident occurred outside the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, where Shia currently has an anti-Trump art installation on display. The display, which is set to protest against Trump’s presidency for the entirety of his four year term, consists of a sparse white wall which features the words, “He will not divide us,” scrawled boldly in black paint.

Underneath the words, a camera films the installation’s spectators. Shia has invited the public to participate by saying the phrase into the camera, which streams live.

Tensions are high in the United States as the reality of a Donald Trump presidency settles in.

Shia stands alongside his provocative piece of performance art.

The young actor has stood alongside his installation since President Trump was sworn-in.
