The 89th Academy Awards will mark the very first time Australia has received more than a single nominee for best picture at the Oscars, with two stunning films nominated for best picture – Lion and Hacksaw Ridge.
Lion, the wonderfully cast tearjerker from Aussie director Garth Davis, has picked up six nods including Australian-sweetheart Nicole Kidman for best supporting actress and Dev Patel for supporting actor.
Next up is Mel Gibson’s intense drama Hacksaw Ridge which has also received six nominations. Mel, who has spent years as a Hollywood pariah after a slew of anti-semitic comments in 2006, beat out veteran directors Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood for the nomination of best director.
Aussie Joel Edgerton was predicted to receive a nod for best actor for his stunning performance in the inter-racial romance Loving but lost to the likes of Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) and Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge).
The clear frontrunner from the nominations announcement is director Damien Chazelle’s love letter to the golden age of Hollywood – La La Land.

Lauded by fans and critics alike, the smash-hit musical – led by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling – has received a whopping 14 nominations, tying with iconic films such as Titanic and All About Eve for the most nominations received by a single film in Oscar’s history.
Other standouts include critical-darling, Moonlight, which is up for a total of eight nominations, including best picture, director and supporting awards for Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris and mystery sci-fi film Arrival, which has also attracted eight nods.
Despite predictions, Amy Adams failed to receive a nod for her stellar portrayal in Arrival, which has instead been favoured for its production design, cinematography and sound awards – not to mention best picture and director.
After last year’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy, it is pleasing to see that seven of the 20 actors nominated for awards are non-white.
