The new trailer includes some previously unseen – and extremely hilarious – moments with her A-list co-stars including Jason Statham, Rose Byrne and Jude Law.
Jason, who is normally stars in action thrillers over comedies, attempts to dissuade Melissa’s homely character from becoming a spy, insisting she’s unqualified.
“I’m a REAL spy,” Jason’s CIA agent character says.
“I once drove a car off a freeway on top of a train while I was on fire!”
Nonetheless it seems that funny lady Melissa sees her fair share of action in this movie too – including a few hilarious high-speed chase moments on a moped.
In fact Melissa, 44, got so involved in her own stunts that she ran into a spot of bother on set of when she suffered a back injury while filming.
“I slipped on wet marble and I went down,” Melissa told E! Online at the world premiere of the film at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, currently underway in Texas.
Thankfully, the stoic star not only recovered but also did the majority of her own stunts in the action-packed comedy. Director Paul Feig, who also directed Melissa in smash-hit comedy Bridesmaids, had nothing but praise for his leading lady and her resilience.
“She’s such a strong person,” director Paul said, praising Melissa and adding that she did about “90 percent” of her own stunts.
“She’s an athletic person and the things I was asking her to do, I knew she could pull off. The minute she put her leg up in the door in Bridesmaids, it was like, ‘OK, I’m not worried about Melissa anymore.'”
Melissa stars in Spy as a bored desk-bound CIA analyst who, wanting to see some action, volunteers for a spy mission alongside co-stars Jude Law, Alison Janney and Jason Statham. Aussie actress Rose Byrne also co-stars together with her partner in romance, Bobby Cannavale and her fellow stars were all alongside her at the premiere.
“I have to say, I didn’t know how hard it would be, but yet, I weirdly loved it,” Melissa said of the movie’s action scenes.
“I tried to do everything. I had an amazing stunt woman who could do things better but I was like [my character] is not supposed to be bionic.”
Paul Feig, who also directed Melissa in Bridesmaids along with Kristen Wiig will team up with the two funny ladies again, as well as Saturday Night Live jokers Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones for the new all-female Ghostbusters remake.
“I’m pretty excited,” McCarthy said. “Kristen and I got together recently and I was like, ‘This is going to be so much fun.'”
We can’t wait to see both movies! The new Ghostbusters movie is due to start filming later this year, while Spy is set to hit cinema screens on 21st May.
