So far 2019 has been an interesting and diverse year for female lead films and the trailer for Andrea Berloff’s directorial debut, The Kitchen, promises more of those qualities.

Mobsters in movies are often associated with big casts of mainly male actors but this time the screen is being taken over by Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss as the stars. Watch the trailer above.

McCarthy and Haddish are renowned for their comedic roles, such as Bridesmaids and Girls Trip respectively. Moss is an audience favourite as well after her performances in HBO’s drama series The Handmaid’s Tale. This will be the actresses’ first time doing dramatic roles alongside each other.

Surprisingly Berloff actually adapted the screenplay from the DC Vertigo comic book series created by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle.

Her fresh and edgy take on the series turned out to be exactly what the executives at New Line Cinema were looking for.

The official premise released by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema goes “Based on the Vertigo comic book series from DC Entertainment, the film stars … three 1978 Hell’s Kitchen housewives whose mobster husbands are sent to prison by the FBI. Left with little but a sharp ax to grind, the ladies take the Irish mafia’s matters into their own hands–proving unexpectedly adept at everything from running the rackets to taking out the competition… literally.”

Alongside McCarthy, Haddish and Moss the other notable cast members are Domhnall Gleeson, Margo Martindale, Common, Bill Camp and James Badge Dale. With an eclectic cast mix like this, late 70s fashion and organised crime, Berloff’s directorial debut has got us intrigued.

Having your husband get carted off to prison by the FBI is no one’s idea of a fun family situation and we’ll get to see how the ladies handle their shit when The Kitchen arrives in Australian cinemas on August 29th.

Gangsters come in all assortments. Watch this video about a former New Zealand gangster doing his bit for the kids.
