In a sentence more shocking than David Beckham trying to squeeze the royal family for a knighthood, we give you: David Beckham celebrating his official acting debut.
In a world where a former wrestling champ may become president, it’s not too much of a stretch for one the world’s biggest sporting legends to make a leap into the arts.
The 42-year-old scored the gig of lifetime after his longtime bestie, director Guy Ritchie, cast him in the new action film, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
On Wednesday, Becks and his 18-year-old son Brooklyn rocked their finest tweed suits as they attended the red carpet premiere of the film at Cineworld Empire in London.
“It was a pleasure to work with the King Arthur: Legend of the Sword team on such an amazing film #KingArthur,” the father-of-four penned on Facebook, along with a behind-the-scenes video of the making of the flick.
In the film, which also stars Charlie Hunnam as the lead character Arthur, David plays the role of ‘Blackleg leader’ Trigger.
“Guy is a good friend of mine and I trust him,” he remarked about his gig.
“I had one or two lines..I have been around Guy’s movies before and it’s a great place to be, you love that community feel.”
The 42-year-old previously made a cameo in the British filmmaker’s 2015 blockbuster The Man from U.N.C.L.E., playing a Russian film projectionist.
Along with his son’s support, wife Victoria sang her hubby’s praises.
Taking to Instagram, the Spice Girl gushed, “So proud of @DavidBeckham! @Kingarthurmovie x VB.”
Despite his high profile, some fans aren’t too sure the man with the golden boot is cut out for the silver screen.
One person, who saw the trailer, remarked on Twitter, “Just watched the Beckham clip in King Arthur. Literally had to cover my eyes was so cringe,” while another added, “Just heard a clip of Mr David Beckham in the new King Arthur film oh god it’s cringe.”
One person joked, “Not sure if Posh should dust off the Oscars dress just yet after seeing King Arthur trailer.”
But the production’s director seems to think David was the best man for the job.
“He was fantastic, I love old Becksy,” Guy Ritchie told Sky News
“He is a fabulous actor and a real pleasure to be with.”
Charlie backed his director up, remarking, “It was lovely (working with Beckham), he did an amazing job. He is very quiet and humble and serious.”
But Madonna’s famous ex isn’t certain Becks should consider doing this full time, remarking, “I don’t know yet, one step at a time.”
David, however is more than keen to make a solid go of it.
“I am very aware that many sportsmen and other celebrities have turned their hand to acting and failed,” he said during a chat with The Times newspaper last year.
“I know that it is a tough profession, where you need a huge amount of skill and discipline, and I wouldn’t want to push myself forward too soon, without learning more about it, and doing a lot more practice.”
