The 1992 classic starred the hilarious Whoopi Goldberg as Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer hiding out from the mob at the San Francisco convent where she pretended to be nun.

The movie generated $232 million worldwide, while the 1993 sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, grossed $57 million in the U.S. The film also went on to become a successful Broadway musical.

No word on whether Whoopi will feature in the new film, but it already has a stellar team behind it with 10 Things I Hate About You writers Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah on board to pen the screenplay while Cinderella’s Allison Shearmur will produce the flick.

Disney are staying tight-lipped on the plot and character returns, but we’ll be praying for at least a cameo from our favourite nun Whoopi!
