From his very first appearance, Doctor Who has been a hero like no other.

An alien travelling through space and time who takes a special interest in the people of Earth and decides to become our protector, he (and later she, see below!) has blended science fiction, horror, adventure and even comedy to give us more than 60 years of some of the most innovative and ever-changing television imaginable.

And the ride is far from over.

Thanks to one of the entertainment industryโ€™s most convenient storylines ever, the same character can regenerate into a new body from time to time, meaning new actors, including Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor, have taken up the mantle.

And with Ncuti Gatwa, best known as the former star of Netflix series Sex Education and one of the Kens in hit film Barbie, the first Black actor in the role, itโ€™s obvious this 15th Doctor is a thoroughly modern Timelord.

Sexually ambiguous, mindful of personal pronouns even while fighting alien invaders and happy to stop by a club for a quick dance between adventures, weโ€™ve got the same Doctor as the past, but with a reboot to bring him into the present.

โ€œHeโ€™s very intelligent, heโ€™s got a purpose to fight for as well, he thinks about society as a whole and how to better it,โ€ Ncuti, 31, says of his Doctor, but heโ€™s also out to have fun.

โ€œI donโ€™t have a people, I donโ€™t have a home,โ€ he says, as his character, in the trailer for this new season, โ€œBut I have freedom!โ€

And that freedom will be explored, Ncuti promises, when The Doctor and his latest companion, Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson), go back and forth through time to solve Earthโ€™s problems once more, including a quick stop in 1960s London to see The Beatles play.

โ€œWeโ€™re just two besties who canโ€™t help but get in trouble,โ€ he says.

โ€œ[Two] troublesome mischief makers with hearts of gold.โ€

And yes, Ncuti has confirmed, along with the fun, there will be monsters, including RuPaulโ€™s Drag Race star Jinkx Monsoon, who will appear as โ€œthe most powerful villain The Doctor has ever facedโ€ in a battle sure to take on stereotypes as the Time Lord attempts to save the world once more.
