It’s been three months since Bec Douros’s mum Rosa died after a long battle with breast cancer, but for The Block: Sky High favourite, this past week has felt like losing her all over again. As the episodes dealing with Rosa’s death went to air, Bec and her husband George relived the heartbreaking days they farewelled the much-loved mum.

“I’ve wanted to watch,” says 27-year-old beautician Bec, “but it’s been really hard.’’ While it has been emotionally wrenching, it’s also enabled Bec to relish those precious moments when her mother, Rosa Martino, appeared on the show and won her own legion of fans – fans who are now sharing in Bec’s grief.

There’s been an outpouring of sympathy for the young Victorian couple on The Block’s Facebook page, along with tributes to the woman dubbed “Mama Block” after she turned up at the construction site with lasagne for all. She even did the contestants’ laundry.

“The birthday episode was really beautiful to watch. Seeing her again when she brought all the food and washed everyone’s clothes was lovely, because that’s how I remember her,” says Bec. “When my mum came on the show, I think the public saw the kind of family I came from and what beautiful people we were surrounded by. People connected with us. Now they’re following this journey, and it’s emotional for them, too. The amount of support we’ve had has been very touching.’’
