SBS created a TV series about kebab-shop life and it’s everything you didn’t know you hoped for

The Aussie rite of passage of hoovering a kebab is about to become television gold.

For some people, there comes a point in a night out where the only thing you can think of in your foggy state is a great big kebab.

And, until now, what happened in kebab shops usually stayed between those walls – mainly because you couldn’t remember it the next day and the only tangible proof that you ate one was the vague waft of garlic sauce in the air.

But some genius at SBS decided to put cameras into two bustling kebab shops in Sydney’s CBD and the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood – and it makes for gripping television.

This gentleman enthusiastically munches on a delicious late-night treat.

Kebab Kings captures Aussies in varying states of sobriety enjoying their heavenly parcels of meat, cheese, and sauce.

Some declare undying love for the cooks, others are clearly more interested in declaring their undying love for each other via rather sloppy public displays of affection.

Others apparently just visit the fluorescent-lit stores for a little snooze.

Patrons at both the Sydney and Melbourne stores were warned that cameras were capturing every move.

Amidst all the drunken hilarity though, Kebab Kings doesn’t hold back with footage showing the downside of life in the late-night haunts.

There is uncomfortable video of people openly brawling with each other and police, and patrons speaking to staff in a way that would make their mothers very, very ashamed.

Either way, this ode to the humble late-night, 1000-calorie “snack” is the kind of compelling viewing you never knew you needed to watch (whilst fervently hoping you won’t see yourself or someone you know on the screen).
