Woman’s Day’s entertainment writer Jessica Grubb got a taste of what it’s like to be under Big Brother’s watchful gaze when she was invited to take the new Big Brother house for a test run before it opens its doors to this year’s housemates.
She spent the night sleeping in the new-look house and reveals it won’t be just Big Brother holding all the power in 2014…
“Just when I thought Big Brother couldn’t possibly come up with another juicy twist, he’s gone and done it again!” says Jessica.
“This year, it’s all about pairs and power. With no say, housemates are coupled up – and those chosen by BB to hold special powers will lord it over the rest.
“During my sleepover, I had to do everything with my partner – visit the diary room, complete challenges… even sleep in the same bed. The housemates with power ruled the roost, and even got to decide if and when the rest of us were allowed to eat!
“So power up your TVs, it’s going to be one hell of a season!”
Executive producer Alex Mavroidakis says: “In the real world, people with power hold all the aces, and this is what we will see play out. “Every week a new power will be introduced, a new housemate will hold the power, and we’ll sit back and watch the sparks fly.”

This year’s Big Brother house is the first two-storey compound, and even has a treehouse. “I can imagine some monkey business going on there,” says host Sonia Kruger.
Woman’s Day’s entertainment writer Jessica Grubb checks out the new house, which has plenty of secret nooks and chambers to encourage intimate chats. There’s also a private sauna. Ooh la la!
Jess tests the new diary room – it passes with flying colours.
Adding another twist into the mix, the housemates will get acquainted with a new creature this year… and it’s just as mysterious and cheeky as Surly the fish.
The new “Muscle Beach” themed gym is under the ever-watchful eye of Big Brother.
Jess experiences what it’s like to be a housemate, hanging out with her fellow roomies by the pool – and being summoned to the diary room!
Jess isn’t too impressed with the early-morning wake-up call.
There are 50 cameras monitoring the house at all times, including six bedroom infrareds to catch any doona-dancing action! Make sure you don’t miss out and catch *Big Brother* from this week at 8.40pm Mon-Thurs on Nine.
