Exciting news for any E. Lockhart fans – Genuine Fraud is coming to a cinema near you!
Major entertainment company Lionsgate has acquired the rights to adapt the New York Times bestseller. With Girls co-stars Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner set to produce the film, this should be a wonderful adaptation of the young adult thriller novel.
The duo will be producing the film through their production company A Casual Romance, and Genuine Fraud is lucky to be their first feature together.
Told in reverse, Genuine Fraud follows the friendship of Imogen and Jule. Imogen is an heiress, a runaway, and a cheat. Jule is a fighter, a chameleon, and a liar. Their friendship takes a dark turn, leading them down a path of disappearances and murder. With a plethora of disguises, an abundance of twists, and a dark and intriguing plot, this is E. Lockhart at her finest.
E. Lockhart is the author of eight YA novels including the bestselling We Were Liars and The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, a Michael L. Printz Award Honor Book, a finalist for the National Book Award, and recipient of the Cybils Award for best young adult novel. It’s still early days, so there’s no casting news quite yet, nor is there a release date. Nonetheless, we’re so excited for this to hit the screens!
Review by Tanaya Lowden
E. Lockhart returns with her first novel since We Were Liars, the book that took the YA world by storm. Genuine Fraud is another highly character-driven and intriguing thriller that will have you questioning what exactly is happening.
In Genuine Fraud, we follow the friendship of Imogen and Jule and the dark turn it takes, leading them down a path of disappearances and murder. One of the most interesting things about this book is that it is told in reverse, a reading experience that heightens the tension of this thriller.
This is one of those books where chances are you are going to hate all of the characters. They are not likeable people, but they don’t need to be likeable to be interesting. From the very first page I was hooked and intrigued as to how these characters became who they were. As the mystery unfolded, I found myself feeling tense with anticipation as we discover just how far some of the characters are willing to go.
Genuine Fraud is intriguing and full of twists, and definitely a must-read if you loved We Were Liars.
