Downton Abbey unveils the new trailer for their final season

It’s time to say goodbye to our favourite aristocratic television family as Downton Abbey releases the trailer ahead of their final season.

Fans of the British period drama know that the sixth season is the last, with the new preview delivering on all the emotion.

Set to premiere in the UK on September 20 and early 2016 for Australia, the minute-long preview is incredibly poignant.

The trailer begins with an acoustic version of Time to Say Goodbye.

Hugh Bonneville’s Robert Crawley tells Mr Carson played by the charming Jim Carter, “If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would. But I can’t, Carson, for neither you nor I can hold back time.”

Meanwhile, his daughter Lady Mary and Anna share a nostalgic moment.

“We have had our moments, haven’t we m’lady?” Anna smiled.

“We certainly have,” Lady Mary replied.

It looks like love is on the horizon for Mary’s sister Edith with a mystery suitor making a glimpse in the 60 second preview. The final season will bring back some of our favourites including brother-in-law Tom, who went to America to find his fortune.

Downton Abbey has been a roller-coaster of emotions. We’re still recovering from the loss of Dan Steven’s Matthew. We can only imagine how exciting (and emotional) the final season will be!

If you thought the past five seasons had been gut-wrenchingly emotional (we’re still reeling over Matthew’s death), you can bet that the conclusion to the show will be delivering nothing short of its predecessors.

Jim warned that they would need “two hankies” for the series.

While the show’s executive producer, Gareth Neame admitted to the Daily Telegraph, “I was in the cutting room yesterday, with four middle aged men, trying not to look like we were crying.”

Even the cast have voiced how emotional the culmination of the hit show has been for them.

Michelle Dockery has shared several emotional Instagram posts from the last day of filming, stating it had been “six of the most glorious years” of her life.

Phyllis Logan who plays Mrs Hughes said that in the end the emotion got the better of all of them including our favourite butler, Mr Carson. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV festival she said, “This was the last, last ever scene. Poor old Sophie [McShera, who plays Daisy] had practically been crying through all the takes.”

“Jim had been very stalwart and he very kindly gave a speech on behalf of us all. Then he, half way through, started going.”

It’s an end of era but we can’t wait to see what Downton has installed for us!
