For Raymond, watching Australian Survivor: Titans V Rebels has been “a little bit of a humbling experience”.
“Watching it back, I’m like, ‘Man, maybe I’m a lot dumber than I thought I was!’” the 27-year-old from the NSW Central Coast tells TV WEEK.
In this week’s episodes of Survivor, Raymond takes one of the biggest risks in the show’s history. Last week, he found an advantage. To play the advantage, he needs to get everyone to write his name at Tribal Council, and then he’ll be able to choose who goes home. But if even one person writes a name other than his, he’ll go home.
Raymond decides to give it a try.
“Realistically, I knew at that point that I hadn’t done all that much in the game,” he explains. “I needed to do something that put the attention on me, where it gave me a shot to win.”
He felt that even if he failed and was sent home, it might not be the end of his time on Survivor.
“I thought it was a dumb enough move, where I could come back and play again on an all-star season while also having absolutely no target on my back because of how stupid I was – which is a positive,” he says.
In his early days on the island, Raymond formed a bond with Kelli, the 55-year-old psychologist who was one of this season of Survivor’s most divisive contestants.
“Honestly, Kelli is one of the most beautiful people you’ll ever meet,” he says. “She’d give up her food so someone else could have a bit more.”
When most of Kelli’s clothes went missing – Raymond suspects a tribemate threw them into the sea one night – he gave her one of his T-shirts.
“It’s the least I could do,” he says.
Since filming finished, Raymond, who has previously worked at McDonald’s, in a DVD store and as a hospital orderly, has been “bumming around”. He doesn’t have a girlfriend currently and is fine with that.
“I can just go do stuff, I can go see many of the friends I’ve made on this series… she’d have to be bloody special for me to even consider dating at this point!”
