Amy Reeves has come a long way since TV WEEK first spoke to her at the start of her Australian Idol journey – all the way to the pointy end of the competition, in fact.
“It’s so surreal,” Amy, 24, tells TV WEEK. “There was no way I could have known I was going to get to this point. I’m just counting my blessings.”
Amy may not have predicted making it this far, but both viewers and judges have been backing the singer for weeks, thanks to her astonishing performances and powerful voice.
The retail assistant from Western Australia cites her rendition of Jessica Mauboy’s “Can I Get A Moment?” as an Idol highlight.
“That was the performance that people actually were like, ‘She’s a contender; she can do more than just stand there and belt it out.’ I feel like people started taking me seriously after that,” Amy says.
Amy lost her father when she was just 15 and he’s been on her mind as she’s progressed in the competition. She thinks he’d have some grounding advice for her right now.
“He’d say, ‘Focus’ – and ‘Have fun,”’ she says. “It feels all-consuming right now, because I’m in it. “There’s a lot of emotion, because [the contestants] are really close, and I’d be really proud if any of them won.
“But thinking of myself, there are all these incredible people, and I hope I do enough to stand out.”
