It has a shady past.

They say it every year but this season of The Block really will be bigger and better than ever before.

The Block‘s new contestants will be renovating the infamous Gatwick Hotel in St Kilda, Melbourne. Dubbed ‘Hotel Hell’, the 1950s building has had a bit of a controversial past for its bevy of crime over the years. But if anyone can flip a derelict building and turn it into a luxe, multi-million dollar property, it’s The Block.

After a stressful auction and finale, we’re ready for another season.

So what can we expect this season? Well, according to long-time judge Shaynna Blaze, it will be unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.

“I think the difference this year is that The Gatwick has a shady past and the show is being filmed in summer for the very first time (in Melbourne),” Shaynna, 55, explains.

“It’s also in a part of St Kilda that has seen the glory days of Melbourne gone by and I think that it’s a part of Melbourne that will be rebirthed.

How can they top this bunch of larrikins?

And while the contestants last year were some of our favourites ever (like Josh and Elyse, Sticks and Wombat), Shaynna is confident they can be topped.

“I keep thinking, ‘oh they can’t do better than that’ and then all of a sudden I walk in and go ‘they did it’.”
