Stephen Curry has scored the leading role in Network Ten’s new Australian comedy series, Mr. Black.
The 42-year-old actor will star in the leading role as Mr. Black, a former sports journalist who is facing his own mortality. Mr. Black is striving to fulfil one last wish, to break up the relationship between his daughter and her sensitive, new-age boyfriend.
Stephen was most recently seen in the 2016 film Hounds of Love, and a 2017 episode of True Story With Hamish & Andy. He is set to appear in ABC and Netflix’s six-part series Pine Gap. He previously won a TV WEEK Logie Award for Most Outstanding Actor in a Series for his role as Graham Kennedy in The King.
Joining Stephen in the cast of Mr. Black is TV WEEK Logie Award winner Nadine Garner (The Henderson Kids, City Homicide), who will play Rowena Black.
Also set to star in the production are Nick Russell (Winners & Losers) as Fin Cruickshank, Sophie Wright (Kinky Boots) as Angela Black and Paul Denny (Lowdown) as Malcolm.
The series was created by Adam Zwar (Wilfred, Agony), and co-written with Amanda Brotchie (Squinters, Lowdown).
Network Ten Head of Comedy, Paul Leadon, says the new series is ‘very special.’
“It is a delight to be working with Adam and Amanda,” Paul says. “They are an incredibly strong creative duo. Throw in Stephen Curry, Nadine Garner, an amazing cast, plus the team at CJZ and we have all the ingredients for a very special narrative comedy.”
Screen Australia Production Investment Manager, Shana Levine, reveals the show will resonate with Australian audiences.
“Adam Zwar has a history of bringing idiosyncratic and likeable characters to our TV screens, and his latest series Mr. Black will be no exception,” Shana says.
“Zwar and his writing team have created a highly entertaining script, breathing new life into the classic father, daughter and daughter’s new boyfriend dynamic. Working alongside the talented CJZ team, we’re confident this witty series will resonate with a wide audience, as it so cleverly draws comedy from the differences and unexpected similarities between baby boomers and millennials.”
Mr. Black is currently under production in Melbourne, and is set to air on TEN and WIN Network in 2019.
