There’s nothing like a classic cop thriller – especially one as explosive as Bent.
When a drug bust goes horribly wrong and claims the life of his partner, detective Danny Gallagher (Karl Urban) is painted as crooked and put behind bars. Finally released, he’s out for revenge but instead finds himself embroiled in a high-stakes conspiracy alongside his old friend Jimmy (Andy Garcia) and federal agent Rebecca (Sofia Vergara).
“It was a great learning experience for me,” Sofia, 46, tells TV WEEK when we ask her about her seductive character and stepping out of her comfort zone.
“I wanted to make it real and believable, so I tried to study up [about federal agents].”
The Colombian actress is famous for her work in sitcom Modern Family.
So Bent is quite a departure from the light-hearted parts Sofia is known for – which is exactly why she wanted to do it.
“It is a very interesting role for me, something different from what I’ve been doing with Modern Family and anything I’ve ever done,” she explains. “So that was very appealing.”
Working alongside Andy Garcia and Karl Urban was also a massive drawcard, she says, and playing Danny’s love interest was made easy thanks to her co-star.
“Karl was so fantastic, helpful and supportive,” Sofia reveals. “We had to do a couple of romantic scenes and he made me feel really comfortable.”
While fans will be delighted to see another side of Sofia, they can also expect more from her beloved character Gloria when Modern Family returns to TV screens. “It’s our 10th season, so it’s very exciting,” she tells us.
“We’re about to start shooting.” The hit US comedy, which provided Sofia with her breakout acting role, is something she will always cherish.
“It’s a dream come true – it’s not often an actress can say they’re a part of something so special,” Sofia says. “It’s really a pleasure to go to work every day.”
After 10 years together, the cast are a second family to the superstar.
“The kids are so big now!” Sofia says. “I just realised Rico [Rodriguez] is 20 years old and when I met him, he was 11.”
Despite her success, Sofia has remained humble.
“I’m very new to acting, so I try to take it little by little and get the opportunities when people approach me,” she explains.
Going forward, the actress is very keen to continue exploring her range.
“In the future, I’d like to do more dramatic roles, but there’s nothing really specific that I have in mind,” she says. “I’m trying to learn and find out what I can do.”
