Samuel Johnson thought it was a long reach to even be nominated for a TV WEEK Logie, let alone win one! But the public voted and tonight the actor took out TV’s highest honour as he was crowned the winner of the Gold Logie for Best Personality on Australian Television.
“I think if you don’t win one, they don’t mean anything, but if you win one it means the world!” Sam tells TV WEEK.
His portrayal as music guru Molly Meldrum earned not only the Gold, but a Silver Logie for Best Actor. It was a role Sam says that wasn’t a matter of choice.
“Well, when the great man comes and asks you to fill the shoes, you don’t say no – no matter how terrified you are,” he says.
That great man he speaks of couldn’t be happier for Sam taking out TV’s highest honour.
“When I learned Sam was nominated for the Gold Logie I was so happy for him,” Molly tells TV WEEK. “He was frighteningly exceptional in the Molly drama. Sam was so convincing in this role that when I walked past the telly and saw him playing Molly I thought, ‘Are Rage playing those Countdown reruns again?’”
It’s not just his talents on screen that are amazing, but Sam has a heart of gold, putting his acting career aside to help raise money for cancer research.
His sister Connie has been undergoing treatment for various cancers for the last 30 years, and Sam has started the Love Your Sister foundation to bring awareness to women around the country.
“Until our charity raises $10 million, I’m not going to act again,” Sam admits. “Hopefully we can get to that $10 million within three years.”
Sam has a lot of supporters in the industry, but last night, his family were his biggest fans. His sister Connie uploaded a gorgeous video to Facebook sharing her excitement over Sam taking home the Gold Logie.
